  Hi, I am looking at leasing a shop on a 3 by 3 by 3 term.I have been advised – as it is a new business – to get a 1 by 2 by 3 etc term but the landlord is not open to that. Any advice, as initially 3 years seems too much?

  Topics: Start-up product, pricing products / margins, getting into retail or selling online.Hi everyone,We’re working on a pet food treat product, and would love to see if there is a mentor here with knowledge on pricing and pitching to retail. We have just had a big packaging fail with our packaging falling apart, and are looking at a new bag option. While looking at the new bag option, I’ve had to relook over our pricing spreadsheet and the entire range (online and in retail) and would like a fresh pair of eyes to give me confidence after this unfortunate bag-splitting experience. We’re start-up and taking a product into a market gap, and doing so sustainably. If anyone is experienced in this area, we would appreciate your opinion.Thank you,Rebecca

  Hey team,I have a product that has sold really well using social channels and the likes of Chooice etc.I am now at the stage where I want to reach out to wholesalers and have a list of chain stores I see could be willing to take on my product. However, I wondered if there is any templates, or assistance in writing the email to the wholesale chain stores as I know it may be a ‘one shot’ to make an impression so don’t want to miss my chnace.Also things like what should be added in an initial reach out email.My website is tagsforgood.co.nz and I sell baby stroller signs that help to kindly warn strangers to not touch our babies in public. We also support many NZ childrens charities, such as The Neonatal Trust, Starship, little heart day and the cystic fibrosis community as many of our immunocompromised babies can have any one of the above mentioned illnesses, or spend time in our neonatal units.   It feels like a never ending battle trying to keep my business afloat. I’m struggling, but have a plan and I’m capable of succeeding. Broken it down and I’m focussed. But everytime I think it’s going to be ok I get hit with something else. I’ve had my last parent pass away, brain surgery and these two rounds of Covid in the last 2 years. It’s a wonder I even have a business let alone two shops. Got anything inspirational for me?

  Hi guys, I have a small online shop that ticks along but I think some products that I’d like to push further are ones that people need to see and feel before buying. I’d love to get these into some stores, but I just don’t know where to start! Questions going around in my head are: Do I need to have stock first before approaching store buyers (some are still in development but I have samples)? What is a typical wholesale margin? What are the agreements (buying vs commission based)? Are there legal implications that I should be thinking about? Is there a ‘retail mentor’ out there or are there other resources that I could look at to help guide me through some of these questions?

  Hi, I had some nice advice, thanks all. One of you came back saying “You need to go back to your website structure and try and integrate some structure that means when you enter a book you can map it to genre, author and title at minimum for customers to easily locate. “As I have just used the site that Maanaki set up, how do I do this please?   We are an online gift registry site that was predominately for weddings prior to Covid19. During Lockdown we added a baby registry which is doing well in terms of sales. With the products we sell for the weddings we have always ordered as required and avoided carrying stock as much as possible. Over the peak season months we order a lot and it’s easy to meet minimums, harder now it’s quiet. What I’m noticing with the baby brands is that we are required to make minimum order values, particularly clothing. The other element of this is that deliveries are taking twice as long. Our shop now function has been popular but because we are not holding stock we order it, it takes 2-4 weeks to arrive and then we send and I don’t feel like this is a great experience for the customer even though I keep in touch with them and let them know. Should we start to build up stock? We might need to get an overdraft to do this – is this a terrible idea at this time? We are online only.

  Hi, we are a Bistro & Bar in Picton. We purchased the business in October last year. It was quite run down and we spent money replacing the TAB with a takeaway coffee area. The majority of our customers were tourists. Our landlords give us 2 months off paying rent. We have 3 staff for whom we got the wage subsidy for. Our bank gave us a $15,000 overdraft and we got the IRD loan for $15,400. Our question is how long do you think we should try to keep going before deciding to close. Thank you.
